Late cancellation fees apply

We’ve all seen the signs in the doctor’s office stating that there will be a late cancellation fee for appointments that are canceled with less than 24 hours notice.  I checked into the legality of this, and yes, the doctor’s office is allowed to charge for a late cancellation or a missed appointment.  How much they are allowed to charge is not standard, although it is usually either a set fee ($25, $50 and sometimes even higher) or what the person’s co-payment from their insurance would be.  One thing though, the patient must be made aware of the late cancellation fee in advance.

There is also the practice that if you are more than a certain amount of time late for your appointment, you lose your appointment spot.  Again, that varies from doctor’s office to doctor’s office.  And whether they can or will charge you, that can vary.

But what about when it’s the reverse?  What happens when you get a last minute call that your doctor’s appointment has to be cancelled or you are kept waiting an unreasonable amount of time to see the doctor?

Last week I was scheduled to get my eye exam at 10:30 a.m. on a work day.  The office didn’t have weekend or late night hours, but they took my insurance, so I made the appointment with them.  I am extremely busy at work, so to leave my job at 10 a.m. and not get back until sometime after 12 p.m. is a very big inconvenience and would mean that I would have to stay much later at work that evening to make up for the lost time.

But, my health is important, more so than my job, so I don’t skip getting the checkups that I need.

As I mentioned, I had left my job at 10 a.m. and hopped on a subway to get to the doctor.  I was approximately 2 blocks away when, at 10:26 a.m., my phone rang.  It was the receptionist at the doctor’s office telling me that the doctor was not going to be in for my appointment.  I was told that she had an emergency, and wasn’t coming into the office that day.  Really??  The doctor JUST told them, 4 minutes before she was supposed to see me, that she wouldn’t be in the office that day?  I don’t buy it.  Maybe I was the first appointment of the day, but why wouldn’t the doctor have been at the office already by that point?  Why was I just finding out when I was 2 blocks away?  Why was I finding out when I should have been seeing the doctor four minutes later?  I let the receptionist know that it was absolutely unacceptable, and that if it had been the other way around, she would have been telling me how I’d be getting a late fee charge.

Then I got to thinking, why shouldn’t I charge them for a late cancellation?  I mean, I lost work hours because of this.  I had to pay for commuting there and back without getting seen by the doctor. Shouldn’t they be as responsible for a late cancellation fee as I would have been?

So, I started researching online.  People actually DO send invoices to doctor’s offices for late cancellations, no shows of doctors, or excessive wait times.  Yes, our time is just as valuable!  So, I’ve decided that’s what I’m going to do.  And what I plan to do going forward when I am waiting more than I should have to wait to be seen.

But you cannot just send the bill for excessive wait times.  You need to inform the doctor’s office, just like they need to inform you.  Note the time that you enter the doctor’s office and have checked in with the receptionist. If you are kept waiting, after 20 minutes, calmly go up to the receptionist, and CALMLY (can’t stress this enough) inform them that you’ve been waiting for 20 minutes, and that at 30 minutes, you will begin charging at a rate of $x/hour.

Now, I mentioned the word “calmly” twice above.  That is because you don’t want to be hysterical, and you don’t want to turn this into a debate.  It’s not up for debate or discussion.  Excuses are not relevant.  I don’t care that there was an “earlier emergency”. That just doctor’s office-speak for … we overbook, and this happens all the time, so we just say that there was an unforeseen emergency.

If they try to make your STATEMENT into a discussion/debate, simply, and CALMLY, say that you were just informing them that you will be invoicing for your lost time, and that is all.  Then turn and walk to your waiting seat.

And then, follow up by sending the invoice!  Don’t back down from what you said you would do.  It will cost the price of a stamp.  And perhaps you’ll be surprised, you actually might get paid.

If waiting excessively to be seen is a usual occurrence at your doctor’s office, though, you may want to find a new doctor.

Never knew how competitive I was … until Fitbit!!

A number of years ago I bought a fitbit. I added myself to the web platform and added friends that were also using fitbits. We would set up the challenges and at times it would get very competitive. Or, should I say that I got very competitive!!

One time I checked a challenge that was going to end in a few hours and noticed that I was losing by 3,000 steps.

So I got off the subway one stop before my usual stop, walked up and down streets on the way home rather than go the straightest route, and didn’t sync until the last minute, so he wouldn’t know he was losing until it was too late! Yeah, I admit it, pathetic!

At the time I didn’t think it was a big deal, but looking back, I am a bit shocked by how sneaky I was that time!

Now I use the Samsung Gear watch. I haven’t added anyone. I don’t even know if that’s something I can do. But I do check to make sure that I’ve at least reached my daily step goal. On days when I don’t, I feel really bad!

While I was a bit taken back by how caught up in competition I can get, I have to admit, I ended up in much better physical shape! So now I’m wondering, should I figure out how to do challenges on the Gear??

FUMING!!!

I was watching / listening to the news today about Irma making landfall.  One of the stories was about how authorities in Palm Beach County, FL had rescued over 50 pets that were left penned up, in yards, tied to trees or to parked cars and left that way as Hurricane Irma approached!

ARE YOU FREAKIN’ KIDDING ME?!?!?!

The authorities said they would be tracking down the owners and prosecuting them! It’s a felony!  Good!  The penalty should be that the owners who did this should be tied to a tree during the next hurricane that blows through!

We need to change our shelter rules to allow ALL people to bring ALL their animals with them!  Not just service animals.  Yes, they can be required to be crated, but allowed to be INSIDE the shelter with their owners.  Pets should never be turned away!

Bulk shopping can be harmful to your wallet!

This morning I went to Costco.  I don’t know of many people who can get out of that store without spending a few hundred dollars at a pop!  Well, I am proud to say that today I was able to succeed in spending less than $90!

Honestly, all I needed was eggs and k-cups!  But obviously, unbeknownst to me, I also “needed” a bunch of other items that I hadn’t even thought about until I passed them in the aisles!  How could I have not realized that I needed all the extra stuff that made its way into my cart?!

One thing I’ve learned … if you go first thing, when they are just opening, you usually can get in and out a lot quicker than later in the day.  But I also find that I spend less if I go early. Because those “product pusher” stations aren’t set up with the samples that people end up shoving past each other to get to the tray before the samples are all grabbed up. And usually the checkout lines aren’t as long.

But for some reason, when we got there today, the doors hadn’t even opened and there was a huge crowd waiting to get in.  I guess everyone has learned the same cost/time saving technique that I’ve known for a while now.

Oh well.  At least I can still save money by not being OVERLY tempted by French Toast Sticks, Apple/Cheddar Chicken Sausages or Mango Peach Salsa!  That is until the Costco people realize this and those pushers are ready to go when the doors open!

 

Why the new blog?

So, I’ve been writing a blog for over a year now.

But then I realized that there are times where I want to post something quick, and not necessarily a full blown blog post.  But that isn’t how the old blog would work.

So, I decided to begin this new blog.  Some posts may be long.  Some will be short.  And hopefully all will be well received!

If you have some time, go check out the old blog.  I’m kinda proud of most of the posts on there.  And I hope to see you here from time to time.  Now to get writing the actual blog posts that aren’t just the introduction!
